Mercedes entered the modern common-rail diesel era with the W203, replacing the older mechanical-injection OM605/606 units. The OM646/647 were the first C-Class diesels to use common-rail injection, improving refinement and fuel economy over the older IDI engines.
The OM646/647 are the engines where the "Black Death" injector seal problem first became widespread — copper seal degradation was not adequately addressed in the initial design. Early W203 diesels (pre-2003) are significantly more prone to injector sealing issues.
