24,650 unique engine replacement enquiries from EnginesMarket.co.uk and EngineFinders.co.uk, combined. Full calendar year 2025. Every enquiry includes: engine code, vehicle model, mileage, customer postcode, and the specific fault described where supplied.
100+ UK engine specialists and workshop owners — direct interviews about failure patterns, repair costs, labour times, and common pitfalls. These are the people who actually rebuild these engines every day.
Vehicle value bands from AutoTrader, Motors.co.uk, and CarGurus UK market data 2025. Manufacturer Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) where available. Used for repair-to-value calculations and validation.
All data is UK-specific. The UK Mercedes market has its own fleet composition, ownership patterns, and repair economics — we don't use US or European data unless explicitly stated and marked as [THIRD-PARTY].

A high enquiry count doesn't necessarily mean an engine is unreliable — it can mean it's fitted to a large number of vehicles, or that those vehicles are at the age where failures become common. We don't claim to know the total vehicle parc for each engine, so we don't claim per-vehicle failure rates.
Our dataset reflects people who contacted us about a replacement engine — not a random sample of all Mercedes owners. It over-represents engines that fail and under-represents ones that don't. We're transparent about this in every data report.
We don't predict future failures. We report on what has happened in our data. We don't say "Engine X will fail at Y miles" — we say "Engine X has been reported to us at Y miles in our 2025 dataset." The future may be different.

How often we update our data and how we handle changes.
Annual refresh: Our core data is refreshed annually, each February, covering the prior full calendar year. The 2026 edition covers 2025 data. The 2027 edition will cover 2026 data and will include a year-on-year comparison.
Fixed baseline: Figures are locked at time of publication and are not silently revised. If we need to correct an error, it's logged on our Corrections Log rather than edited away.
Supplementary updates: We may publish supplementary reports (e.g., regional breakdowns, new engine families) between annual cycles. These are clearly marked as additional analysis, not replacements for the core annual dataset.
This refresh cycle ensures our data is current enough to be useful, stable enough to be cited, and honest about its vintage. A data point from 2025 is a data point from 2025 — not pretending to be 2026.
