We publish Mercedes engine content reviewed by an independent panel of Mercedes specialists. The panel includes master technicians, engine rebuilder specialists and data analysts. They verify technical accuracy, challenge our interpretation of failure patterns, and sign off on every reliability rating before publication. Their role is to keep us honest — not to sell engines, not to endorse suppliers, and not to promote any particular repair route. We pay them for their time; they do not receive any commission from enquiries or sales.

Full panel composition, selection criteria, and the review process, below.

Who We Are

The Mercedes Engine Expert Panel exists to ensure every piece of technical content on this site is accurate, honest and useful to owners.

We are not a garage, not a dealership and not affiliated with Mercedes‑Benz AG. We are an independent editorial resource that researches Mercedes engines, publishes what we find, and routes enquiries to a vetted network of 15+ specialist suppliers.

Our panel is the quality‑control layer between our research and publication. They review all engine knowledge centres, failure pages, data reports and cost guides. If a panel member disagrees with a conclusion, we go back to the data — and we only publish when the panel is satisfied.

This is the same panel that reviews our annual failure index and the methodology behind every [EM‑VERIFIED] figure you see on the site. Their work is documented in our corrections log, where we record any factual errors caught after publication and the panel’s recommended fix.

The Panel’s Expertise

Our panel covers the full spectrum of Mercedes engine knowledge — from workshop diagnosis to statistical analysis.

Master Technicians

Mercedes‑qualified technicians with 20+ years of hands‑on experience across every modern engine family — OM651, OM642, OM654, M276, M178 and more.

Engine Rebuilding Specialists

Workshop owners who rebuild Mercedes engines daily. They know what fails, what can be repaired, and what is not worth fixing — the source of our 70% threshold guidance.

Data Analysts

Statisticians who work with the proprietary enquiry data (24,650+ quotes) to identify trends, remove noise, and ensure our conclusions are data‑driven, not anecdotal.

Collectively, the panel has reviewed every engine code in our engine directory and validated the failure patterns published on failure pages. They also contribute to our case studies by interpreting real owner outcomes.

How We Select Panel Members

We do not recruit from supplier lists or advertising partners. We select experts based on a published set of criteria.

#CriterionWhat We Check
1Mercedes specialismDemonstrable, current experience working on Mercedes powertrains — not a general garage that also sees Mercedes
2Minimum 15 years in the tradeWe require a track record that spans multiple engine generations, not just current models
3Active workshop practicePanel members must be working in a workshop environment today — retired or academic‑only experience is not sufficient
4No commercial conflictPanel members do not own or work for any engine supply or fitting business that receives enquiries from us
5Evidence of diagnostic skillWe review case history, technical forum contributions, or published work that demonstrates deep diagnostic ability
6Commitment to evidenceMembers must be willing to revise opinions when new data contradicts them — no fixed agendas
7Referenceable reputationWe take up references from other workshops, suppliers and customers to confirm standing

These criteria are reviewed annually. If a member no longer meets the bar, they are rotated out. Our editorial standards and verified outcomes pages provide further transparency.

What They Review

Every piece of technical content on this site is reviewed by at least one panel member before publication.

Panel members also review major updates to existing pages, especially when new failure patterns emerge or cost data changes significantly.

Editorial Independence

Our panel is structurally independent from our commercial activities.

We pay panel members a fixed fee for their time, regardless of what they conclude. They receive no commission, no referral fees, and no bonus based on how many readers click through to a quote. This is stated in our editorial standards and reinforced in every how‑it‑works page.

If a panel member identifies an error in a published article, we correct it and log the correction in our corrections log — no exceptions. This is not a theoretical policy; we have made corrections in the past and will continue to do so.

Our commercial relationship with suppliers (they pay for enquiries) does not influence panel decisions. The panel does not review suppliers; that is handled separately through our specialist vetting process, which is also published and independent.

How Accuracy Is Ensured

Beyond the panel review, we have a multi‑layer fact‑checking process.

  1. Data source verification — every number is tagged ([EM‑VERIFIED], [THIRD‑PARTY], etc.) and its provenance is documented in our methodology page.
  2. Cross‑reference with multiple sources — we triangulate proprietary enquiry data with manufacturer TSBs, real workshop feedback ([EM‑INTERVIEW]) and post‑sale surveys ([EM‑SURVEY]).
  3. Panel review — at least one panel member reads every final draft and signs off with a documented comment.
  4. Public corrections log — any error discovered after publication is logged, corrected, and re‑reviewed. The corrections log is publicly accessible.
  5. Annual methodology review — the panel reviews our data collection and analysis methods each year to ensure they remain sound. The latest review is documented in Engine Failure Index 2026.

This process is why our reliability ratings are cited by other sites and why our data pages are used as a reference by workshops and insurers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are the experts on the panel?

They are independent Mercedes specialists — master technicians, engine rebuilders, data analysts and diagnostics experts — each with 15+ years of hands‑on Mercedes experience. We do not publish their names, but we disclose their roles and experience (see above).

Are panel members paid?

Yes, we pay them a fixed fee for their time reviewing content. They are not paid based on any commercial outcome (e.g., number of quotes generated) and they do not receive commissions from suppliers or workshops.

Do they work for Mercedes‑Benz?

No. Our panel members are independent of Mercedes‑Benz AG. They have experience working at Mercedes dealerships in the past but are not currently employed by the manufacturer.

How often do they review new content?

Every technical page is reviewed before publication. Major updates to existing pages are also reviewed. We also conduct a full annual review of all key data pages, which is noted in the Engine Failure Index.

Can I suggest a correction?

Yes. If you spot an error, use our contact form or the correction suggestion link on each page. We will investigate with the panel and, if confirmed, log the correction in our corrections log.

Does the panel endorse specific suppliers?

No. The panel does not recommend or endorse any particular workshop, supplier or brand. Their role is purely technical review of our content. Supplier recommendations are handled separately through our specialist vetting page.
