Overview
Mercedes C-Class W203 — Overview
The W203 is the second-generation C-Class, launched in July 2000 as the successor to the W202.
It introduced a stiffer chassis, improved interior quality, and a more modern design language that echoed the larger S-Class. The engine range evolved significantly during production: early cars used the M111 2.0-litre four-cylinder and M112 V6 petrols, with OM611 and OM612 diesels. A major 2002 update replaced the M111 with the M271 Kompressor four-cylinders, while the 2004 facelift brought revised styling, the OM646 diesel, and later the M272 V6 petrols. A 2005 engine overhaul saw the C230K replaced by a V6, the C280 and C350 introduced, and the C320 CDI arriving at the expense of the C270 CDI.

Best & Worst Engines

Best Diesel Overall
OM646.962 (C200 CDI/C220 CDI, 2003–2007)
“The OM646 is the improved version of the OM611 — common-rail diesel with better injector reliability, improved emissions, and a proven 200,000-mile-plus lifespan. It's the W203's most dependable diesel, free of the earlier OM611's injector fragility.”
Who it's for: buyers who want a reliable, economical diesel without the V6's complexity.

Best Petrol Overall
M112.953 (C320, 3.2-litre V6)
“The 3.2-litre M112 V6 delivers 218bhp of smooth, naturally aspirated power. No supercharger to worry about, no timing-chain tensioner issues — just a robust, proven V6 that sounds wonderful and keeps going. The C240's 2.6-litre M112 is equally solid.”
Who it's for: buyers who want a smooth six-cylinder petrol without the Kompressor's complexities.

Highest Risk
M111.951/M111.955 (early C180)
“The early 2.0-litre M111 four-cylinder is prone to camshaft adjuster magnet oil leaks that can reach the ECU, plus general age-related oil leaks from gaskets and seals. It's an old engine in an old car — and replacement costs frequently exceed the vehicle's value.”
Who it's for: budget buyers willing to accept age-related issues.

Most Expensive Failure
OM612.962 (C270 CDI, 2.7-litre 5-cyl diesel)
“The five-cylinder OM612 is rare and specialist — when the injectors fail or the turbo goes, parts are harder to find and labour is more intensive than the four-cylinder diesels. Replacement costs can hit five figures on a bad day.”
Who it's for: buyers who need 170bhp diesel torque and are prepared for specialist maintenance.

Best Value
M271.946 (C180 Kompressor, 2002–2007)
“The 1.8-litre supercharged M271 offers 143bhp, decent economy, and the same fundamental robustness as its 163bhp sibling. It's the volume engine for good reason — cheap to run, cheap to replace, and more than enough for UK roads.”
Who it's for: buyers who want a premium badge without the premium running costs.

Most Overlooked
M112.912 (C240, 2.6-litre V6)
“The 2.6-litre M112 V6 is often overlooked in favour of the Kompressor fours or the bigger C320, but it offers 170bhp of smooth, naturally aspirated power without the M271's supercharger complexity. It's the W203's sleeper pick — a petrol that drives like a proper Mercedes.”
Who it's for: buyers who want a V6 without the C320's fuel consumption.

Mercedes C-Class W203 — Ownership Economics
The W203 rule
A £2,500–£4,800 OM646 recon against a £4,000 W203 sits at 63–120% of the car's value. On a sub-£4,000 W203, that brushes our 70% Mercedes threshold — we'll honestly tell you to walk away. Against a well-kept £8,000+ example (particularly a C320 or C270 CDI), the same recon drops to a routine 31–60% — a repair decision, not a financial one. Value the car first.

W203 Engine Replacement Costs — By Engine and Condition
No Generation variance from the Model Page's baseline figures — W203 saloon shares identical engine-bay access with its S203 estate and CL203 SportCoupé siblings, so costs are inherited directly per the Authority Model, with no divergence note required.
