The approval printed on the bottle is the contract: it certifies the oil's chemistry, its behaviour under extended service intervals, and its compatibility with your engine's emissions hardware. The DPF point is the one that costs owners real money. Low-SAPS oils burn with far less sulphated ash, and ash is what gradually blocks a particulate filter that regeneration cannot clear. For petrol engines from the M270 through the M276, MB 229.5 is the standard; the AMG V8s run the same approval in a heavier viscosity — 5W-40 for the M157, 0W-40 for the M178 [THIRD-PARTY]. Where two approved specifications appear on the bottle, either satisfies the requirement, but if you are between choices and want certainty, match the handbook exactly.

MB 229.5 is a full-SAPS oil for petrol engines; MB 229.51 is a low-SAPS oil for diesels with a DPF. Putting 229.5 in a DPF-equipped diesel accelerates ash build-up in the filter, which is why the approval marking matters more than brand or viscosity [THIRD-PARTY].
No. Viscosity is only half the requirement — the bottle must also carry the correct MB approval for your engine. A 5W-30 without MB 229.5 or 229.51 (as applicable) is not the right oil, whatever the brand name on the label [THIRD-PARTY].
