Mercedes never specified a timing chain replacement interval for the OM642 — it was designed as a "life of engine" component. In practice, the hydraulic tensioner is the weakest point. The tensioner relies on oil pressure to maintain chain tension; as it wears, it can leak down when the engine is off, allowing the chain to slacken slightly. On cold start, this produces a brief metallic rattle until oil pressure builds — usually 1–2 seconds. If the rattle persists or gets louder, the tensioner is failing and, if left, the chain can skip a tooth or, in extreme cases, break.

To confirm you have an OM642, check the engine number stamp — it will have 642 as the first three digits. The engine number location varies by chassis: on E-Class and C-Class it is typically on the front left side of the block, visible from above once the engine cover is removed. To verify which timing system is fitted, the timing cover on the OM642 has a distinctive trapezoidal shape with the tensioner access plug visible at the front. The absence of a belt-driven camshaft arrangement is visually obvious once the fan and shroud are removed — if you see a chain and sprocket behind a metal cover, it's chain-driven.
