What's coming out of the exhaust tells a story. Here's what each colour and sound means on a Mercedes diesel or petrol.
Over-fuelling — often injector, MAF, or turbo‑related. Common on OM651 and OM642 diesels.
Oil burning — turbo seals, valve stem seals, or piston rings. Serious on any Mercedes engine.
Coolant ingress (head gasket) or unburnt diesel. Can be urgent — especially on OM642 and M276.
Boost leak or turbo wear. Often precedes turbo failure on OM651 and OM642.

Black smoke on diesel models (OM651 and OM642) is one of the most common symptoms, often caused by a failing injector or a clogged air filter. Cold‑start rattle is also very common on OM651, OM642 and M272 engines.
Oil pressure warning, coolant temperature warning with steam, severe knocking, or any flashing red warning light. Stop the engine and call for recovery — continued driving can cause catastrophic engine failure.
