The 8% who scrapped were disproportionately older AMG models (pre-2013 M156 and early M157 cars) where a reconditioned engine supply cost of £8,000–£14,000 exceeded 70% of the vehicle's market value [EM-VERIFIED]. None of the newer M177/M178 owners in our sample chose to scrap, reflecting the higher retained value of those vehicles.
Satisfaction was not evenly distributed across the four choices. Among the 62% who chose reconditioned, 94% reported satisfaction at the 3–6 month follow-up — the highest of any group, and consistent with the warranty removing most of the anxiety that typically follows a major AMG repair. Among the 18% who chose used, satisfaction dropped to 78%, with the dissatisfied minority citing ongoing uncertainty about the unit's remaining life rather than any actual fault having occurred — in other words, the concern was psychological as much as mechanical. The 12% who chose a rebuild reported the most polarised outcomes: high satisfaction where the rest of the engine's condition matched expectations, and very low satisfaction in the handful of cases where a second issue emerged shortly after, unrelated to the original repair [EM-SURVEY]. Among the 8% who scrapped, satisfaction was predictably low immediately after, but interestingly, 50% reported that in hindsight, scrapping was the right decision given the alternative cost — a useful data point for owners facing a similar choice.

The strong preference for reconditioned engines in this sample is consistent with the emotional attachment AMG owners often have to their vehicles. Unlike volume-brand owners, where cost is the dominant factor, AMG owners frequently talked about the car's "soul" and the desire to maintain its originality [EM-INTERVIEW]. The 12% who chose a rebuild were disproportionately concentrated among owners with a fully documented service history and a long-standing relationship with a specialist — suggesting confidence in the rest of the engine's condition, not just the price, drove that choice. The 8% who scrapped were almost exclusively older, higher-mileage examples where the 70% threshold was clearly exceeded. Notably, no owner who chose a reconditioned engine with a warranty regretted that decision, even if the upfront cost was significantly higher than a used alternative.
The 38% who didn't choose reconditioned weren't making a mistake — they were making a different, equally valid trade. Owners who chose used were disproportionately on older vehicles at the lower end of the value range, where a reconditioned unit's higher cost would have pushed the repair-to-value ratio into the ⚠️ Watch zone; a used engine kept the decision comfortably within the 70% threshold. Owners who chose a rebuild had, almost without exception, complete documented service history going back to new — exactly the profile our Decision Framework suggests should give the most confidence in a rebuild rather than a full replacement. Owners who scrapped were, without exception, on vehicles where the reconditioned supply cost alone exceeded 70% of the vehicle's market value — a clear financial signal that scrapping was the rational choice. Our data shows that owners who scrapped and later bought a replacement AMG were, on average, more satisfied with their outcome than those who repaired an older, lower-value car, suggesting that the emotional attachment that drives many AMG owners to repair may not always be the best financial decision [EM-SURVEY].

Where the AMG sample diverges most is in the scrapping rate — at 8%, this is higher than the 2–3% typically seen on mainstream Mercedes models, plausibly reflecting the combination of very high repair costs and the particular value curve of performance vehicles where modifications and track use can reduce value more rapidly than standard models.
