One of the most common fuel system fault codes on Mercedes diesel engines. It rarely means the entire fuel system has failed — and the cheapest fix is often the right one.
P0090 means the ECU is reporting an electrical fault in the fuel pressure regulator circuit — usually on the rail-mounted pressure control valve. On most Mercedes diesels (OM651, OM642, OM646) this is a wiring or solenoid fault long before it's a failed fuel pump.

In a common-rail diesel, the ECU uses a fuel pressure regulator (often called a metering valve or pressure control valve) to maintain the correct fuel pressure in the rail. P0090 is logged when the ECU detects an electrical fault in that regulator circuit — an open circuit, a short, or an implausible resistance reading. Crucially, the code describes a circuit fault, not a fuel pressure fault. The regulator might be fine but its wiring or connector could have failed. That distinction is the entire difference between a £200 fix and a £1,200 one, and it's why the diagnostic order below matters more than the code itself. This code appears across the full range of Mercedes common-rail diesels, from the OM646 to the OM651 and OM642, and the diagnostic approach is essentially identical regardless of which engine triggers it.

Inspect the regulator connector and wiring harness for chafing, corrosion or bad pins. This alone resolves a meaningful share of P0090 cases.
A specialist will check the resistance across the regulator solenoid against factory spec. Out-of-spec readings point directly to the regulator.
With a known-good regulator, or by back-probing the connector, they'll confirm the ECU is sending the correct PWM signal.

Conditionally, yes — short journeys to get it diagnosed. P0090 on its own is not an engine-destroying fault the way an oil pressure warning is. But if the vehicle has dropped into limp mode, motorway driving becomes genuinely unsafe because you cannot accelerate normally to merge or overtake. And if the regulator is failing, prolonged running can cause the fuel pressure to oscillate, which can overwork the fuel pump and injectors — turning a cheap fix into an expensive one. Get it looked at within days, not weeks.
For short journeys to reach a garage, generally yes — but not for normal use, and not on motorways if the vehicle has entered limp mode, because you won't be able to accelerate safely. Prolonged running with a faulty regulator can also damage injectors and the pump.
