How we track regional data, what the data includes, and its limitations.
Source: Internal CRM quote-request data from EnginesMarket.co.uk and EngineFinders.co.uk, combined. Full calendar year 2025. 24,650 unique quote requests across all brands; 5,920 relate specifically to Mercedes-Benz. Customer postcodes were aggregated into UK government regions using the ONS regional classification.
What we track: the geographic distribution of unique customer quote requests specifying a Mercedes engine code or vehicle. This reflects where replacement enquiries originate, not where the vehicle was purchased or where the repair will be carried out (though these are usually the same).
Limitations: our regional data reflects enquiry density, not failure rate by region. A region with more enquiries simply has more Mercedes owners (or more owners who contact us), not necessarily worse reliability. The South East has the highest absolute enquiry volume because it has the highest density of Mercedes ownership — not because Mercedes engines fail more often there. We also do not adjust for regional population differences, so absolute volumes should be read with this in mind.
Refresh cycle: annually, each February. This is our first edition and establishes the baseline year. We plan to add per-engine regional breakdowns in future editions, subject to data availability.

The models generating enquiries vary significantly by region — here's what we observed.
The South East has the highest proportion of E-Class (24%) and S-Class (8%) enquiries in the UK. This reflects the region's higher concentration of executive and luxury vehicle ownership, particularly in the Home Counties and London commuter belt. OM651 and OM642 diesels dominate, but M276 petrol enquiries are also above average [PATTERN DATA].
Scotland has the highest 4MATIC/SUV share in the UK at 22% (vs. 14% national average), with GLC and GLE enquiries particularly prominent. This reflects the region's rural roads, winter weather conditions, and higher demand for all-wheel-drive vehicles. OM642 enquiries are proportionally higher than the OM651 due to the GLC/GLE weighting [PATTERN DATA].
The North West shows the highest A-Class (24%) and CLA (9%) enquiry share in the UK, reflecting the region's urban concentration and younger vehicle profile. OM651 and M270/M274 petrol enquiries are proportionally higher, while larger diesel engines (OM642, OM656) are less common [PATTERN DATA].

Why some regions have more enquiries — and why it matters.
The South East and South West have the highest Mercedes ownership per capita in the UK. More vehicles = more potential failures = more enquiries. This is the single biggest factor driving regional differences — not regional variation in reliability [PATTERN DATA].
Scotland and Wales have higher SUV/4MATIC enquiry shares because the conditions demand it. More all-wheel-drive vehicles on the road means more enquiries for the engines fitted to them (OM642, OM654 in GLC/GLE) and fewer for rear-drive saloons [PATTERN DATA].
Urban regions (North West, Yorkshire) have higher proportions of compact models (A-Class, CLA) and petrol engines. Rural regions (South West, Wales, Scotland) have higher SUV and diesel proportions. This affects both enquiry volume and the engine families represented [PATTERN DATA].
Importantly, none of these factors suggest engines are more or less reliable in any region. The failure mechanisms for an OM651 balance shaft or an OM642 swirl flap are identical regardless of postcode. Regional differences reflect the vehicles that people choose to drive, not how those vehicles perform.
If you're in a region with high enquiry volume, it doesn't mean your engine is more likely to fail — it means there are more Mercedes owners in your area, and therefore more people contacting us about replacements. What matters for your individual vehicle is the same as anywhere else: service history, driving patterns, and preventative maintenance.
The regional data is most useful for specialists and parts suppliers. If you're a workshop in Scotland, you can expect higher demand for OM642 diesel engines and GLC/GLE parts. If you're in the North West, OM651 and compact petrol engines will be your bread and butter. For owners, the data can help you understand which specialists in your area will have the most experience with your specific engine type.
If you're considering a used Mercedes purchase, regional variation in model mix is worth understanding. An E-Class from the South East is likely to have been used for motorway commuting — good for diesel longevity. A GLC from Scotland may have seen more challenging conditions — not necessarily a problem, but worth checking for corrosion and suspension wear alongside the engine.
